A smart leader is the one who knows the people's pulse. Measuring People's pulse is all the more important when you are in the opposition and waiting for the power. To turn this opportunity to raise his own stature at all the levels (and into more votes), is not a simple task.
Chandrababu Naidu is doing exactly same by his efforts to bring President Kalam into the race.
There is no doubt, despite what ever criticisms that one may have, Mr Naidu is the most progressive politician India is blessed to have today.
By backing an incumbent and highly popular President, Mr Naidu shot many birds at the same time. Due to his minority origins every political party is very careful in saying a single word against Mr Kalam. Also, due his very high popularity ratings - every political party is afraid to criticise Mr Kalam.
Mr Naidu also clearly emerged as the Leader of the newly formed third front. His own initiatives to talk to NDA and also the Madam Sonia ji, the later his bete noire, Mr Naidu clearly emerged as a consensus national figure who can mingle with and talk to anyone, if the issue is having a merit. By pushing the other leaders behind the shadows (what ever may be the reasons for likes of Amma or Mulayum), Naidu once again proved that he is a smart leader.
Coming back to Presidential race, it is immaterial now, what is going happen in the coming days. Even if Kalam contests and loose, the nation by and large may feel proud of him. Everyone one sees an independent, staunch nationalist President who lost a battle against spineless politicians who are afraid of Madam. In this scenario, the main losers are Tamil parties except Amma. Even in this case, Mr Naidu will come with flying colours and convert his stakes into valuable votes in the coming AP elections.
Only scenario where Naidu will loose is - if Kalam refuses to contest and NDA asks him and his Third front to support Mr Shekawat. This will cost Mr Naidu a lot and in fact he will hand over lot of ammunition to Congress in AP. From Kalam to Shekhawat is a huhe 180 Degrees turn.
Having raised stakes, Naidu cannot effort to allow Kalam to drop from the race. Else, Naidu will dig in his own grave! (May be)
